ARCHIVED - Murcia investigators central in nabbing burglars of home of famous footballer
Valuables worth millions were stolen from the Ibiza home of former Real Madrid star Ronaldo
A court in Murcia has been leading the investigation that managed to dismantle the gang of thieves who allegedly broke into former Brazilian soccer player and president of Valladolid FC, Ronaldo Nazario’s Ibiza home last weekend.
Five men and one woman, of Albanian, Spanish and Romanian nationality, have so far been arrested in the Alicante municipality of Denia and in Malaga. Following a spate of home invasions in the Region of Murcia last year, an investigation was launched to track down the robbers.
What Murcian officials did not expect was that the criminal gang would make a leap to targeting the homes of the rich and famous. On Sunday June 26, they raided the San Josep de Ibiza house of former Real Madrid and Barcelona soccer player Ronaldo Nazário, and made off with jewellery and watches valued at around three million euros, as well as 10,000 euros in cash.
Italian PSG midfielder Marco Verrati was actually staying in the house at the time of the robbery but nobody was home when the thieves gained access through the upper floor.
Ronaldo and Verrati filed a complaint with the Guardia Civil in the early hours of Monday morning, and by this time Murcian authorities had already identified two of the perpetrators, who were quickly arrested along with two accomplices. The remaining two thieves were nabbed a short time later in Malaga.
