ARCHIVED - Murcia hospital leads the way with artificial lung treatment for Covid patients
50 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatments have been carried out the Region of Murcia
The Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia city has established itself as a reference point for ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment in Covid patients since the start of the pandemic.
ECMO systems are used as a last resort for Covid patients with extreme symptoms whose lungs are not functioning properly, and the treatment essentially provides patients with artificial lungs, which extract blood from the body, oxygenate it and then return it.
According to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO), of which the Arrixaca hospital is a member, the ECMO system has been used to treat 50 Covid patients in the Region of Murcia in the past year. This places the Arrixaca hospital fourth in using this treatment on a national level and the Murcia centre has also made it to the European top ten for this kind of medical treatment.
The treatment has been in use for over ten years, but the pandemic has greatly increased the need for extracorporeal oxygenation. According to experts from the Arrixaca, ECMO systems are only used in the most extreme cases, when there is no other alternative for the patient, due to the complexity and cost of the treatment (around 20,000 euros per patient).
Elsewhere in Spain, medical experts in the Canary Islands have developed a pioneering method of testing the effectiveness of coronavirus vaccines.
