ARCHIVED - Murcia Fire Service recruits its first ever female driver
27 new recruits were sworn into Murcia city's fire fighting service and Local Police this week
Murcia City Council's Firefighting Service has "broken barriers" this week with the recruitment of the brigade's first female driver as part of a campaign to ramp up resources and improve rapid response times.
A further 13 drivers and 13 Local Police officers also took up new posts this week, although all 27 will officially begin their duties from July 1.
During a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday June 28, the Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, addressed new recruit Irene Sanchez personally, highlighting the fact that for the first time in its history, the Fire Extinguishing and Rescue Service will have a female driver.
"You have to break barriers and you have done it. You are sure to become an example for many other women who will come after you".
Congratulating all of the new personnel, he stressed that "in order to reach this moment you have spent hours and hours studying and training, often sacrificing your time with your family and friends".
"The local authority is increasing the number of Local Police officers and SEIS personnel to provide these bodies with more and better resources, enabling them to provide an immediate, rapid and effective response to the security needs of the people of Murcia," added the mayor.
