ARCHIVED - Murcia doctor lists homosexuality as an illness
A 19-year-old from Murcia was horrified when she saw her sexual orientation classed as an illness on a medical report
Three decades after the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from the official list of mental diseases, a gynaecologist in the Region of Murcia issued a report which named homosexuality as an illness.
A 19-year-old from Llano de Brujas in Murcia was left shocked when she saw her medical report after a trip to the gynaecologist’s office, as the doctor had filled in the ‘current illness’ part of the report with the word ‘homosexual’.
The incident has caused outrage on social media which several groups and organisations classing the report as “humiliating treatment due to homophobia”.
The regional Health Ministry in Murcia have launched an investigation into the incident, but have initially blamed a “technological error” which caused a mistake in the patient’s report.
Reina Sofía Hospital, where the appointment took place, has stated that all of the necessary measures will be put in place to investigate the incident and will be issuing an apology to the young woman, who plays for CAP women’s football team in the city of Murcia.
According to the patient and her family, when they returned to the hospital to submit a formal complaint, they were told that other patients had also had similar problems with this particular gynaecologist.
