ARCHIVED - Murcia activists plant lettuce crop in middle of the Mar Menor
The symbolic move comes before a mass protest planned in Murcia city this Thursday
As a part of the ongoing protests and political rows surrounding the pollution of the Mar Menor, a group of activists, Ecologistas en Acción, have symbolically ‘planted’ a crop of lettuces in the lagoon.
By sending a crop of floating lettuces into the lagoon, the protestors are attempting to highlight the agricultural problem in the Region of Murcia, as run-off from the fields surrounding the Mar Menor continues to flow into the water, carrying damaging pollutants and agricultural nutrients.
These substances used by farmers are extremely harmful to plant and fish species in the salt-water lagoon, and are said to be the cause of the episode of anoxia at the end of August, which left thousands of fish dead and caused worldwide outrage.
Just last week, scientists warned that another anoxia pocket could be forming, further highlighting the lack of political action in the Region.
While the local, regional and central governments squabble over who should take responsibility for the Mar Menor, over 150 environmental and social groups have taken action by creating a petition to declare the lagoon a legal entity and organising a major protest march on October 7.
