ARCHIVED - Most wanted drug trafficker in Poland one of two fugitives arrested in Alicante
National Police and Guardia Civil in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province arrest two criminals on the run
One of the most wanted criminals in Poland and a fugitive wanted in several countries are both behind bars following their arrests in Altea and Benidorm in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province.
In the first case, a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Polish police has shut down a Polish drug trafficking organisation that transported drugs stashed in vehicles travelling from Spain to Scandanavian and Eastern European countries.
Investigators have arrested 13 people in Poland and in the provinces of Alicante and Malaga. One of those arrested is a Polish man in his 40s who was hiding out in a luxury villa in the Altea Hills urbanisation. The fugitive has 31 pending cases for drug trafficking in his country, where he is considered "one of the most wanted traffickers".
The detainee is believed to be the network's ringleader and had previously lived on the Costa del Sol, where "problems arising from his illicit activities" forced him to move to Altea Hills.
He was allegedly shot twice on the Costa del Sol in 2020 and was reportedly kidnapped in Nerja a few years earlier. After a lengthy investigation and surveillance operation, he was arrested and extradited to Poland.
Meanwhile, a Dutch fugitive wanted in several countries has been arrested in Benidorm and jailed for four-and-a-half years for drug trafficking, money laundering, membership of a criminal organisation and forgery of legal documents.
The 52-year-old had reportedly been hiding out in the coastal town for several months and was subject to a European arrest warrant.
Officers from the Judicial National Police Group III of Benidorm, in collaboration with the Fugitive Groups of the C.G.P.J and the Organised Crime Group of the B.P.P.J, received a request for arrest from the European authorities, who issued an arrest and surrender warrant for numerous crimes committed in Holland, Denmark and Spain.
Amongst the crimes the Dutch man is accused of is the large-scale international smuggling of cocaine between the countries.
Following his arrest, the fugitive was handed over to the Central Court of Instruction of the Audiencia Nacional to finalise the formalities for his extradition to Holland where he was sentenced and jailed.
