ARCHIVED - Mazarron celebrates Tomato Day festival
In pictures: a celebration of the humble tomato as dozens of bags of red fruit handed out to astonished passers-by
After the solemn institutional acts and readings of the Constitution Day celebrations this Tuesday December 6, the municipality of Mazarrón celebrated ‘El Día del Tomate’ – Tomato Day – in honour of the most popular fruit grown in the local countryside.
In the Tomato Day celebrations – which were nothing like the Tomatina tomato-throwing festival in Spain’s Buñol – the chosen Tomato Queens and ladies of honour walked along the Avenida de la Constitución handing out tomatoes.
Youth queen, Fatima Zouine, child queen, Thais García, child master, José Castillo, and the maids of honour distributed, together with the local authorities, bags of tomatoes to the neighbours and visitors who were passing by.
