ARCHIVED - Mass rollout of fourth dose of Covid vaccine to begin in Valencia Region imminently
The vaccine will be administered to the elderly and vulnerable in Alicante province and the rest of the region
President of the Valencia Region, Ximo Puig, confirmed on Monday September 5 that the mass vaccination of the fourth dose against Covid will be rolled out to the elderly and vulnerable "very soon".
During a speech at the New Economy Forum, the president also said that in the coming weeks the government will convene experts to analyse the evolution of the pandemic and "prepare for winter", exercising "the same prudence" that has been applied since the beginning of the global health crisis.
He stressed that "continued mask wearing" is essential to contain the flu and added that the administration of the fourth dose of vaccine "is not a decision made by the Generalitat Valenciana, but of the Interterritorial Council.
"This is a decisive step towards overcoming the pandemic, and there is real hope with the number of critically ill patients in ICU now at a minimum after two-and-a-half years of continued suffering," he said.
The Valencia Region reached a grim milestone on Friday September 2 with the number of Covid-related deaths since the start of the crisis reaching the 10,000 mark.
Fatalities have refused to budge and remain in the double digits, fluctuating on pretty much a weekly basis, but in contrast, all other important indicators, in particular new infections and hospital admissions, continue to fall.
