ARCHIVED - Malaga museum to host exhibition of Valencian artist
The artwork was inspired by the coastline of the Alicante town of Jávea
For the next three months, the Carmen Thyssen Museum Málaga will be home to the stunning works of artist Joaquín Sorolla whose paintings were inspired by the rugged coastline of the Alicante town of Jávea. The temporary Sorolla in Jávea exhibition will run from October 22 until January 16 and will feature 27 works, including canvases and notes, that the painter created during four trips to the Valencian coast in the early 20th century.
The museum already houses one masterpiece titled “Rocks of Jávea and the white boat”, painted by Sorolla in 1905, and the other pieces on display are from around the same time period. The artist explored a new style while staying in Alicante and gradually moved away from painting Jávea’s stunning beaches in favour of the more rugged coves and rocks, a factor which led to international recognition that would make Sorolla the most successful Spanish painter of his time.
Sorolla visited Jávea for the first time in 1896 and he gushed about the beauty of the town in letters home to his wife, calling it “Sublime, immense Jávea.” He returned to paint in 1898, 1900 and 1905 and described the trips as some of the happiest times in his life.
