ARCHIVED - Majority of Spaniards support the switch to electric vehicles
Most people in Spain feel we should ditch petrol cars sooner than planned
The fight against climate change is a global one and Spain has committed to outlawing the sale of petrol and diesel cars in favour of electric vehicles by 2040. However, a new survey conducted by 40dB has revealed that the vast majority of Spaniards, 62.9%, believe the government should take things a step further and go electric by 2035 in line with the European Commission’s proposal.
In Spain, it is generally younger people who are most concerned with global warming, with 94.3% of those aged between 18 and 24 considering it very or quite urgent to implement preventative measures. Interestingly, 65% of respondents believe that the coronavirus pandemic has caused governments to pay less attention to the fight against climate change.
There is broad support throughout Spain for restricting the circulation of the most polluting vehicles in cities: 74.5% of people support the implementation of low-emission zones, while the Ministry of Transport plans to dedicate millions from the European recovery plan to support 149 municipalities to implement these low-emission areas before 2023.
When asked about the type of car they plan to purchase in the future, 60% of respondents opted for plug-in cars, including hybrids and pure electric. Only 26.1% preferred petrol and diesel vehicles, while the most off-putting factors of owning electric cars are their price (51.8%) and the lack of charging points (25.9%).
With the country slowly moving away from fossil fuels such as coal, the transport sector has become the biggest contributor of greenhouse gases in recent years, expelling around 25% of total emissions.
Although the main culprits are vehicles travelling on Spain’s roads and highways, the aviation industry contributes a great deal, and 71.6% of people are in favour of prohibiting air travel for journeys of less than 300 kilometres when an alternative train route is available.
