ARCHIVED - Live bird webcams from Spanish regional parks as Booted eagles and Black vultures breed
The Spanish Ornithological Society is barmy about birds!
The webcams follow species such as the booted eagle through their daily life, and even offer the opportunity to see baby birds hatch.
From May 5, a webcam (#webcamcalzada) showing the day to day life of the booted eagles in the Parque Nacional de Guadarrama, following their recent migration from Africa to the Iberian Peninsula has been in place, enabling enthusiasts to watch the daily comings and goings in the nest of these magnificent birds.
The project, based in the region of Madrid, has been developed by SEOBirdLife and the Parque Nacional and allows viewers to enjoy nature from the comfort of their own homes.
Thanks to the webcams, bird watchers have the chance to follow different species of birds as they carry out their daily activities and can even monitor their reproductive process, including any difficulties that they may encounter while trying to feed the hatchlings.
One of the webcams is following two booted eagles which produced two eggs at the end of April.
Booted eagles are migratory raptors which breed in forest area across Spain. During their migration, they congregate in the Straits of Gibraltar and cross the sea to Africa, after which they cross the Sahara Desert in order to reach the open savanna in the Sahel, where they spend the winter around 3,500 kilometres away from their nests in Spain.
These birds spend around two months of the year completing their migratory journey, five months in their reproductive (nesting) area, found in the forests of the Iberian Peninsula, and five months in their winter area, in Africa.
When nesting, these birds can travel up to 75 kilometres away from their nest each day in order to find food.
All of these particularities mean that it is necessary for different countries to collaborate throughout the year to establish a global habitat management that favours the conservation of this species. International cooperation is essential to identify and facilitate safe spaces for booted eagles.
