ARCHIVED - Late Orihuela and Murcia priest is one step closer to being a saint after Pope Francis recognition
Murcian Diego Hernández, a diocesan spiritual director in the Vega Baja, Alicante, is now a Venerable and a step closer to being canonised
Pope Francis has this week recognised the "heroic virtues" of the late Orihuela and Murcia priest Diego Hernández González, and given him the title of Venerable – a step closer to being canonised.
Father Diego Hernández González was born in Javalí Nuevo, in Murcia, on 25 December 1914, into a humble family, and at the age of 10 he entered the diocesan seminary of St. Fulgencio in the city.
During the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he is reported to have heroically saved consecrated Eucharistic species (the Body and Blood of Christ) from an arson attack on the church in his home town, before being arrested a few days later, and sentenced to three years in prison and hard labour.
Ordained a priest in Barcelona in June 1940, he began his priestly ministry in various villages in Murcia and later in Villena, Alicante, displaying an "untiring apostolic dedication and devotion to charity".
In 1954 he was appointed Spiritual Director of the Diocesan Seminary of Orihuela, where he told parishioners: "I hope that, if I am what I should be, my grain of grain will become an ear of holy priests, which is so lacking."
He was held in great esteem in Orihuela, with some testimonies revealing that "no one in the parish went without food thanks to Diego".
Others claim that, "like everyone else, he cultivated his plot of land, combining it with his religious services."
The now Venerable Diego Hernández González died on January 16, 1976, with a "reputation for sanctity", and a move to have him canonised was launched in January 2002, based on the testimonies of those who knew him during his lifetime, as well as some supposedly inexplicable healings.
