ARCHIVED - Large scale clear-up of illegally dumped waste in Orihuela
Fed-up farmers have complained to Orihuela Council about the continued "careless dumping" of waste in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province
Continued complaints from farmers in Orihuela have prompted a large scale council clear-up of rubbish and debris illegally dumped on roadsides across the municipality.
Over the last few days, mounds of illegally dumped rubble and waste have been removed from the roadsides in La Dehesa de Pinohermoso, Vereda Liorna, Barrio Mariano Cases, Barrio Sagrado Corazón in the Hurchillo district, Camino de Enmedio and in Vereda la Doctora.
"The dumping of debris, rubble and waste on roads and paths causes traffic problems as well as great damage to the environment. Some of the rubbish is carelessly discarded next to plots of organic crops, which goes against this type of cultivation and affects ecosystems," warned the head of Orihuela's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Valverde, whilst appealing for "responsible actions to avoid these problems".
