Mazarrón covered swimming pool operational from October
The council are roofing in the open-air pool rather than building a new one
A long-term problem in the infrastructural sporting facilities in the Mazarrón municipality has been the lack of a covered swimming pool, a facility available to residents in most other municipalities of the Murcia Region.
During the Spring the council announced that rather than invest into a new pool, it would be roofing over the existing summer pool, a project which would be considerably cheaper than constructing a new installation and would enable the council to offer winter swimming courses to residents without having to spend too much money.
A huge investment has been made into building the new sports complex just outside the Puerto de Mazarrón, and although originally this was the preferred location for a much larger new swimming pool, the economic downturn has forced a revision of expenditure at all levels and the original plans will have to wait for better times.
In the meantime, work continues to roof in the existing pool and the council say this will be ready for the autumn, with a programme of swimming tuition already planned to start in October.
The participants in the summer swimming school all received their certificates this week ahead of the return to school.
350 children and 80 adults have participated in the courses.
In the meantime, local residents have the option of using either of the two purpose built covered pools in neighbouring Totana and Alhama de Murcia, both of which offer substantial indoor facilities.
