June 16 to 18 Costume bathing and an early 20th century weekend of beach fun in El Portus
The Modernists Association of Cartagena host a great weekend of fun historical re-enactment!
A highly original weekend of bathing and barbecues is being held by the Modernists Association of Cartagena from June 16 to 18 in the village of El Portús, which nestles in a small bay between the city of Cartagena and the headland of Cabo Tiñoso, with bathers invited to come along and enjoy a dip dressed in the typical beach attire of the early 20th century.
Various members of modernist associations from other parts of Spain will be in attendance and of course members of the general public are welcome to join the fun!
The weekend begins on Friday June 16 with a “habaneras” concert by the SAM Santa Cecilia de Pozo Estrecho alongside the beach, beginning at 20.00, and a retro fashion parade is also scheduled to show off the costumes selected by participants.
The first swim of the weekend is planned for Saturday June 17 at 11.00 and is followed by traditional beach games on the sand, the jury’s decision regarding the best costume on display and of course a convivial lunch. At 18.00 another interesting activity consists of recreating some of the beach scenes made famous by painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), who is best remembered for his mastery at capturing the heat and light of the Mediterranean coastline of Spain in the first 20 years of the 20th century.
The Saturday evening ends with a dinner dance, and on Sunday the program includes more bathing and, almost inevitably, a lunch of caldero for all those taking part.
Anyone who is interested in being part of this great event should contact Los Modernistas de Cartagena de Levante by telephone on 722 293963!
