ARCHIVED - July hotel reservations in Alicante province up a third on last year
Hotels along the coastline on the Costa Blanca forecast 61 per cent occupancy this month.
Hotels along the coastline of Alicante province are forecasting 61 per cent occupancy for July, up 33.5 per cent on the same month in 2020, according to a Summer Season Occupancy Survey carried out by the Valencian Tourist Board.
The region as a whole, is expected to see 57.2 per cent occupancy, 26.8 per higher than in 2020.
Hopes are now pinned on late bookings to bump the figures, says the regional secretary for tourism,
Francesc Colomer, pointing out that "Covid has significantly delayed the selection of tourist travel destinations, so the final occupation that we reach this summer depends on last minute reservations".
However, the sector is confident that 2021 "will be a more dynamic summer than that of 2020", with a progressive lifting of restrictions, an accelerated vaccination campaign and the introduction of the EU Digital Covid passport.
"The certificate allows us to be more optimistic about the recovery of the international market, without which there isn't much of a tourist model in the region".
A breakdown of the survey data show that hotels on the Alicante coast (excluding Benidorm) expect 61.3 per cent occupancy of all beds/rooms, up 33.5 per cent on July 2020, the Valencia coast expects to occupy 59.6 per cent (a rise of 36.5 per cent), and establishments in Castellón forecast 51 per cent occupancy, 22.1 per cent higher than last year.
According to the latest data compiled by the Valencian Tourism Board, 40 of the 41 establishments in Alicante city are already in operation, with the reopening of the last of the major hotels, the four-star Gran Sol, affiliated by Meliá, undergoing the final stages of refurbishment before taking guests from August 1.
