ARCHIVED - Isaac Peral submarine passes further set of tests in Cartagena
The first of the S-80 series, developed in Cartagena, is on track to being handed over to the Spanish navy
The ‘Isaac Peral’ S-81 submarine has passed yet another important test in Cartagena this Wednesday January 19, bringing the vessel one step closer to beginning its military career.
According to shipbuilding company Navantia, the recent mooring tests carried out on the submarine were successful, proving that the vessel responds correctly to all orders and that the propulsion and axis line systems are working properly.
The tests were carried out at the Cartagena shipyard under the supervision of inspectors from the Directorate of Engineering and Construction of the Spanish navy.
With this latest successful endeavor, the S-81 has passed its sixth safely milestone, after five previous revisions: loading of the batteries, electrical power-up, launching, first start-up of diesel generators and first battery charge.
The 'Isaac Peral' is the first of the S-80 series of submarines which aim to renovate the Spanish navy’s submarine fleet. The design, construction and development of the vessels has so far taken approximately 20 years and required an investment of almost 4 billion euros. The series comprises four submarines in total and it is anticipated that the remaining three vessels of the new fleet will be handed over to the navy progressively between now and February 2028.
