ARCHIVED - Illegal e-scooter rider injured in accident on the CV-725 in Denia
The young man was allegedly 'piggy-backing" a friend and travelling on an interurban road in the Marina Alta, Alicante province
An illegal e-scooter driver required hospital treatment following an accident in which he careered into a kerb on the CV-725 in Denia and fell off the vehicle, fracturing his knee-cap.
Not only was the rider travelling on an interurban road - scooters are only allowed on urban roads - he was "piggy-backing" a friend, also prohibited.
The incident happened at 4.50pm on Tuesday January 25, on the main access into Denia, also known as the Ondara motorway.
According to the Local Police, he suffered a knee injury after hitting the kerb near the GALP petrol station, and was taken to Denia hospital for treatment.
The CV-725 has the highest traffic density in the town, and the police have warned that the accident "demonstrates the risks that can be involved in driving these personal mobility vehicles".
"The driver and his companion, who was unharmed, committed an offence for two reasons: firstly riding with two people on a scooter and secondly, using a prohibited road such as the CV-725," added the police.
In November, Denia Town Hall revealed plans to clamp down on the use of scooters and bicycles in pedestrian areas along with other measures to "safeguard the public and "avoid risky situations".
