ARCHIVED - Illegal dumping on the rise in Orihuela
Toilets and mattresses are amongst items discarded in Orihuela in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca of Alicante province.
The illegal dumping of bulky household items has become a real problem in Orihuela with more than 500 incidents reported to the police by the council over recent months.
Toilets, sinks, entire kitchens, mattresses and other remains from house renovations litter certain streets which are proving more and more popular with illegal dumpers.
Despite ongoing campaigns to raises awareness and the potential health hazard and eyesore, the problem has escalated, and offenders are being warned they will be fined if caught.
A major clear up has begun, and leaflets explaining how and where rubbish can be dumped left at the illegal dumping sites.
And anyone who witnesses someone discarding household and other rubbish is asked to call the police, "otherwise no matter how many resources are allocated to this service, the streets will never be clean", because it's "impossible to have a cleaner and a policeman on duty 24 hours a day next to each bin or dumping site".
Orihuela has a free collection service available to residents. To arrange collection of large, bulky items, call 965 306 178 for urban and districts and 966 076 100 ext. 3516/4511 for collections on the coast.
