ARCHIVED - Iconic Burial of the Sardine festival in Murcia cancelled again
The Murcia celebration had been rescheduled for October, but organisers have once again cancelled the event due to Covid
The parade of Sardineros, which was supposed to take place in Murcia city at some point in October, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, a decision which has been met by approval from Murcia city council.
The Agrupación de Sardineros, the people and groups who usually organise and take part in the ‘Entierro de la Sardina’ (Burial of the Sardine) and the accompanying parades, originally selected the month of October because the association thought that Murcia would be in a situation of ‘new normal’ by now.
However, as there are still over 500 active cases in the Region and some Covid restrictions in place, the Sardineros have decided to cancel the parade once again.
Their decision has not been made lightly, as a representative assured the public that the Sardineros are just as anxious to take to the streets as everyone else, but the local authorities have thanked the association for their responsible decision.
José Antonio Sánchez, the president of Agrupación de Sardineros, explained the decision by stating that the association doesn’t want to cause any unnecessary Covid outbreaks and those anxious to celebrate the ‘Burial of the Sardine’ are now looking to April 2022, which is when the spectacular parades and partying usually take place.
