ARCHIVED - Highest number of new cases since July: Valencia Covid update December 13
6,696 new infections and 11 deaths over the weekend in Alicante province and the rest of the Valencia region
The week has begun with another bleak record high in terms of new Covid infections in the Valencia region with a staggering 6,696 positives over the weekend – the highest figure since July – and 11 deaths.
This is 51% higher than the 3,444 cases reported on Tuesday December 7 when the Regional Ministry of Health revealed the previous weekend's health data.
In addition, there are an additional 54 coronavirus patients hospitalised in the region, including 16 new admissions to ICU, as the 14-day cumulative incidence rate surpasses 330 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
New cases
A further 6,696 new cases have been reported over the weekend, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 554,799 people. By province: 41,041 in Castellón (61,129 in total); 2,258 in Alicante (201,737) and 3,397 in Valencia (291,932). There is one unassigned case.
Recoveries
2,828 people have recovered from Covid since the last update, meaning that to date, 536,012 people in the Valencian region have overcome the virus. By province: 58,311 in Castellón, 195,038 in Alicante and 282,607 in Valencia. The total number of unassigned discharges remains at 56.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 717 people admitted to hospitals in the three provinces, up from 563 on Friday December 10, 109 of whom are being treated in ICU (16 more): 118 in the province of Castellón, 16 in ICU; 228 in the province of Alicante, 41 in the ICU; and 371 in the province of Valencia, 52 of them in the ICU.
Fatalities
There have been 11 reported deaths since the last update, aged between 64 and 100-years-old. This means the total number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic stands at 7,984: 891 of these deaths have been recorded in Castellón; 3,066 in Alicante; and 4,027 in the province of Valencia.
Vaccinations
There has been no update in relation vaccinations, but as of Friday, a total of 4,256,807 people had received one dose of vaccine, and 4,187,358 people werew fully immunised with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or the single-dose Janssen.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 22,244 active cases, which represents 3.93% of the total positives.
Outbreaks
There have been two reported outbreaks with 10 or more associated cases in the last 72 hours: in Valencia city and the town of Elche in the Baix Vinalopo, both with 10 cases. The first breakout occurred in in a workplace and the second in an educational facility.
