ARCHIVED - Gun-wielding home burglar arrested in Torre Pacheco
Witnesses spotted the detainee wearing a distinctive Formula 1 boiler suit on the roof of a house in Torre Pacheco before his arrest
The Guardia Civil have arrested a man in connection with at least two home burglaries in Torre Pacheco and making threats with a firearm at a bar in the Murcia town.
The detainee allegedly targeted homes in the Cartagena district of Los Urrutias and made serious threats whilst armed in a bar in La Palma-Cartagena.
He was arrested after reports from several neighbours who witnessed the suspect climbing on the roof of a house, attempting to gain entry, before fleeing on a stolen bicycle when he realised he had been spotted.
Officers from the Citizen Security Prevention Unit responded to the reports and interviewed eye witnesses, who provided information about his physical characteristics and distinctive clothing.
Meanwhile, the 43-year-old Moroccan suspect had run into a restaurant and attempted to hide behind the bar, forcing staff to call the police.
Officers arrived at the restaurant and discovered the detainee wearing overalls, similar to those used by Formula 1 mechanics and identical to the clothing described by the owner of the bar in which threats had been made hours earlier.
The proprietor claimed the detainee had allegedly refused to pay for a drink and pulled a firearm – believed to a revolver – from his overalls, before threatening the owner and running off.
The incidents were linked due to the clothing and it later transpired the bike had been stolen from a house in Los Urrutias, a village 22km away.
The 43-year-old will appear before Cartagena Court of Instruction charged with two counts of burglary and one of making serious threats, although his alleged involvement in other break-ins has not been ruled out.
The arrest comes at the same time as news that local residents have become so fed up with the spate of home burglaries in Los Urrutias and other Mar Menor towns that they have begun taking it in turns to patrol the streets at night to try and deter would-be thieves.
