ARCHIVED - Guejar Sierra in Granada to open year-round chairlift
Guejar Sierra council in Granada, Andalucia, will operate what is only the second chairlift in all of Europe to be open year round.
In a bid to boost Guejar Sierra’s popularity with mountain bikers, the council will be installing a chairlift suitable for both passengers and bikes to attract tourists to the area.
The chairlift, which will be the second only to open all year-round in Europe and the first for Andalucia, will transport cyclists to the Guejar Sierra BTT Centre, which offers around 200 kilometres of cycling trails and is currently only accessible by professionals or very fit amateur cyclists.
The council has now approved the budget for the plans and say they are now working with the team which will be in charge of carrying out the viability report and of finding the best location for the chairlift.
The mayor of Guejar Sierra said the council will work with the specialists who built the first mountain bike chairlift in Europe Ripoll to create the lift, which will be sustainable and with respect for nature in mind.
The chairlift will be located around 20 minutes from Granada city in a planned boost for sports tourism and to attract athletes and families after the pandemic has seen a major drop in visitors to the province of Granada.
The Granada Provincial Council is also investing €175,000 into improving traffic numbers at the airport.
