ARCHIVED - Green light for new shopping and leisure complex in Elche on the Costa Blanca
The 50,000 sqm commercial centre will be built next to the Martínez Valero Stadium in the Baix Vinalopó comarca of Alicante province.
Plans for a new €13 million shopping, leisure and restaurant complex in Elche have been given the go ahead and a building licence granted.
Along with the development of a 50,000 sqm commercial centre, a new four-lane road with two large roundabouts will be built at the intersection of Avenidas Martínez Valero and José Esquitino Sempere to handle the influx of traffic.
Parking for 1,000 cars will also be created and a bike lane installed.
The new complex will be a four-storey building with two basements for commercial, restaurant and leisure use, with the possibility of hotel and sports use above.
The project, which will be built by Astonquer SL group, has been designed to "respond to the demand for commercial needs in the area and will enhance the leisure and restaurant offer within the municipality".
A start date hasn't yet been set but now the builing licence has been granted, work is expected to begin imminently.
The new centre is sure to be a positive boost to the local economy and will generate hundreds of new jobs in Elche, which is already home to a number of large retail outlets, including Centre Comercial L'Aljub, Outlet Store Moda Elche and Centre Commercial Store Moda Elche, El Corte Inglés and Centro Comercial Abierto shopping centre which houses more than 100 shops.
Elche is also internationally renowned for its footwear industry, and Elche Business Park, seven kilometres from the city centre near the town of Torrellano, attracts thousands of visitors, offering weekly tours.
