ARCHIVED - Free entry to Alicante archaeological site this spring: Illeta dels Banyets is 9km from Alicante City
Lucentum and the Illeta dels Banyets provide insights into the ancient history of the Costa Blanca
Two of the most important archaeological sites in and around the city of Alicante are open to visitors free of charge for the remainder of the spring, albeit with certain restrictions in place due to the pandemic, providing opportunities to explore both the history and the geography of the Costa Blanca within easy reach of the provincial capital.
One of the sites is the Illeta dels Banyets, a small promontory jutting out into the Mediterranean 9 kilometres north of the centre of Alicante in Campello. Here it is possible to see remains dating back as far as the Bronze Age and evidence of successive civilizations including the Romans and the Moors at what was clearly an important trading post in past millennia.
The other is Lucentum, the remains of the Iberian and Roman city which preceded Alicante between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd Century AD. This is located in the heart of the city, just inland from the Playa de la Almadraba and the Playa de la Albufereta.
Both sites are open between Tuesday and Saturday from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 15.30 to 17.30, and on Sundays and public holidays from 10.00 to 14.00.
Guided tours can be reserved at 12.00 midday from Tuesday to Saturday at a cost of 1.50 euros per person. Bookings can be made here, although a separate telephone number is provided for tours in English: 965 149006.
Due to socializing restrictions group sizes are limited to a maximum of 6 for those belonging to one household and 4 for those belonging to different households.
