ARCHIVED - First major scrubland fire of the year behind Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena
Emergency responders in Cartagena worked for more than three hours to bring the expansive blaze under control
It took three helicopters, a plane, 15 firefighters and three forestry brigades to bring a fire under control which affected 11.5 hectares of forest in the Orfeo ravine, behind the Santa Lucía Hospital and near the Escombreras Valley in Cartagena on Thursday (July 22).

The flames and smoke near Mount San Julián were clearly visible from the city, leading to more than one hundred calls to the emergency services from 11:41am.
Throughout the morning, the Infomur Plan – an emergency response plan which pulls together the necessary resources from different sources in the eventuality of forest fires – mobilised their air-borne fire brigades to tackle the blaze from above, and by 2pm, the flames had been subdued. According to Cartagena City Council, by 5:20pm the fire was brought under control.
Due to the prevailing wind, the Local Police of Cartagena had to cut traffic on the Santa Lucía cemetery road and on the road that connects Lo Campano with Escombreras. As of 2:15 p.m., both roads were reopened to traffic.
