ARCHIVED - First case of Indian variant detected in the Region of Murcia: Covid update June 10
Covid cases and hospital patients have decreased slightly across the Region according to latest figures
This Thursday (June 10), the health authorities in the Region of Murcia confirmed that the first case of the Indian variant of coronavirus has been detected in the region, but the case is unlikely to cause an outbreak.
A woman from Madrid travelled to her second home in Murcia while infected with the Indian strain, but she didn’t come into direct contact with anyone and has since returned to Madrid, making it unlikely that this particular case has caused any further infections in the region.
In addition to this case of the Indian variant, 471 cases of the British strain have been detected in Murcia so far, along with nine cases of the South African strain and seven cases of the Brazilian variant.
The arrival of the Indian variant in Murcia comes amidst decreasing cases in the region, as just 23 new cases of Covid were reported on Wednesday (June 9), 34 fewer than the previous day’s figure. Of these 23 new cases, eight were in the municipality of Murcia, two were in Cartagena, two were in Cieza and the rest were spread across different municipalities.
These new figures, combined with the 84 people who have recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours, make the total number of active cases in the Region 591, which is 61 fewer cases than the previous day.
In addition, no further Covid deaths have been reported in Murcia, meaning that the total number of deaths caused by the virus to date remains at 1,604.
On Wednesday (June 9), 1,203 coronavirus tests were administered in the Region, of which 1.9 per cent yielded a positive result.
The situation in the Region’s hospitals continues to improve gradually and there are now 35 Covid patients in total, of whom 14 are in intensive care. Furthermore, there are 556 patients who are in isolation at home.
