ARCHIVED - Electrical storm causes flooding and chaos across the Region of Murcia
Cartagena, Los Alcázares, Murcia and Calasparra all reported incidents during the storm
An intense storm on Monday night, September 21, wreaked havoc in many municipalities in the Region of Murcia, leaving many roads and riverbeds flooded and forcing the emergency services to attend over 160 weather-related incidents.
One of the municipalities worst hit by the storm was Cartagena, where almost 50 litres per square metre fell in just half an hour, and the intense rain combined with strong winds caused several trees and lampposts to fall over, as well as raising concerns about whether the dry riverbed would overflow. However, there appears to be no imminent danger of the Rambla flooding, although it is certainly more full than usual.
Los Alcázares was also badly affected and the local authorities were forced to shut off several roads as the municipality filled with water. Some houses were also affected by the rainwater, but no major incidents were reported.
Meanwhile, the north west of the region also felt the effects of the intense electrical storm, with up to 130 litres per square metre falling in Bullas and up to 72 in Calasparra, where Civil Protection services were called to help several residents who reported flooded basements and garages.
In the municipality of Molina de Segura, the emergency services rescued five people who were trapped in their vehicles due to the torrential rain.

However, the storm was not unexpected and Aemet had previously issued yellow and orange weather alerts to give the authorities and residents some forewarning and on Tuesday morning, September 21, the regional authorities declared a state of Level 1 emergency due to the flooding, activating the INUNMUR flood plan.
