ARCHIVED - Elche police probe fraudulent use of disabled parking badges by the dead
Police are clamping down on the fraudulent use of dead people's disabled blue badges in Elche, Alicante province.
Elche Police are investigating a number of fraudsters over the alleged use of dead people's blue badges to park in spaces reserved for those with reduced mobility.
Most recently, on May 5, the Local Police spotted a motorist parking in a disabled parking spot and became suspicious.
When officers asked the driver if they could see his blue badge documentation, he apparently handed over a photocopy of a card which didn't correspond to the motorist or the vehicle.
He was arrested and charged with documentation fraud.
"In the last few months different situations related to this type of crime have been detected in Elche," said the police, adding: "Among them is the use of parking cards belonging to deceased people and the photocopying of them for use by others."
To clamp down on the abuse of the parking badges, the Local Police and Urban Mobility are carrying out regular surveillance across the municipality.
