ARCHIVED - El Gordo Christmas lottery tickets now on sale throughout Spain!
2.4 billion euros will be distributed in prize money after the draw on 22nd December
As most of Spain braces itself for a heatwave which could lead to all-time record temperatures in the early part of next week it may seem a little premature to begin thinking about Christmas, but as of Thursday 8th July tickets are on sale for the “El Gordo” lottery draw which will provide extra festive cheer to a lucky few on 22nd December.
It is traditional for the El Gordo tickets to be put up for sale in the summer as many Spaniards like to purchase their “lucky numbers” while holidaying away from home, and the sales campaign was launched on Thursday with a series of advertisements playing on the different hardships which have affected the country during the pandemic.
172 million “décimos” are on sale, split down into 172 series of numbers, each containing 100,000 numbers, costing 20 euros each from the 11,000 official State lottery outlets and a little more if purchased from bars and shops (and available online). A total of 2,408 million euros will be distributed in prize money, the same figure as in the 2020 draw.
