ARCHIVED - Driver seriously hurt in multi-vehicle motorway crash near Villena
Five vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the A-31 in the Alto Vinalopo area of Alicante province
A driver has been seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the A-31 motorway near Villena involving four cars and a lorry.
According to the Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade Consortium, the horror smash happened at around 4.50pm on Wednesday October 20 at kilometre 177 of the A-31, when a several vehicles were forced to "brake suddenly in a chain reaction", leaving one of the drivers seriously hurt and trapped inside his car.
Several units from Villena fire station were mobilised to the scene, as well as a regional medical helicopter and police. Firefighters managed to release the wounded motorist and he was taken to Alicante hospital in an ambulance, after the helicopter was forced to return to base "due to a lack of sunlight hours".
No other injuries have been reported and it's still unclear what caused the drivers to brake suddenly, or how many people were involved.
Six people, including two nine-year-old girls, were seriously injured in a head-on horror crash on the Elche-La Marina road in the Baix Vinalopo area of Alicante province last week.
