ARCHIVED - Driver killed and another hurt in double-lorry collision on the A-7 in Orihuela
The injured lorry driver is being treated at the Vega Baja Hospital in Alicante province
A driver has died in a collision between two lorries on the A-7 as it passes through Orihuela and the other is currently in hospital.
The fatal crash happened at around 8.15pm on Thursday June 30 and the Emergency Coordination Centre (Cicu) immediately despatched two ambulances and medical crews along with firefighters.
Tragically, one of the drivers, a man whose age has not been disclosed, died on impact and the other, a 45-year-old male, was taken to the Vega Baja Hospital having sustained multiple polycontusions.
It's not clear exactly what caused the accident and an investigation is underway.
Major road surface improvements have begun on the busiest section of the A-7 in Alicante province this week following a Ministry of Transport investment of 7.4 million euros.
Work will focus specifically on the A-7 Alicante ring road, Elche-Creviellente and Camino de Castilla dual carriageways, along with the N332 El Campello and Alicante bypass to, amongst other things, improve road safety conditions.
