ARCHIVED - Drink-driving priest arrested in Alhama de Murcia
Police also detained a couple in Mazarrón, Murcia, for driving motorised scooters on the motorway
Officers from the local police force in Alhama de Murcia have arrested a priest after he was found to be driving while under the influence.
The 35-year-old was pulled over at around 3am after the police saw him carry out an illegal manoeuvre on one of the town’s main streets. Officers then breathalysed the driver, who identified himself using a bishopric credential, and determined that he was over the legal alcohol limit, as he tested positive at 0.83mg/L.
Once at the police station, the priest became increasingly agitated and even violent, with police officers having to immobilise him on two occasions. The man kept insisting that he had to leave because he was officiating Mass the following morning.
As his car had been seized, the priest called a fellow religious colleague to pick him up and didn’t end up spending the night at the station, although he will be charged with a crime against road safety.
Driving miniscooters on the RM-3
Elsewhere in the Region of Murcia, officers in Mazarrón caught a couple speeding down the RM-3 Totana-Mazarrón motorway on motorised scooters. The pair, both aged 23, were found to be breaking several traffic laws, as they were driving down the motorway with no helmets and no lights, using scooters without a license plate and with no insurance or other required documentation. In addition, neither drivers had ever been in possession of a driver’s license.
The young Spanish couple will be charged with several crimes against road safety and the Guardia Civil have seized their vehicles for the time being.
