ARCHIVED - Double-murder probe after bodies of couple found gagged and buried in ditch in Elche
Police are looking into a possible link between the disappearance of a woman and her boyfriend in June 2019 from the neighbouring town of Aspe
The National Police in Elche have launched a murder investigation following the grisly discovery of the bodies of a man and a woman buried in a ravine on the outskirts of Elche.
The murdered couple had both been bound and gagged with duct tape, and the man's corpse showed signs of torture, according to police sources, who ARE now considering a link between the disappearance of a man and a woman under "strange" circumstances from the neighbouring town of Aspe IN June 2019.
"The main hypothesis is that it was a double murder due to a settling of scores related to criminal activities and that the double crime was committed approximately three years ago," said police.
The harrowing find was made on Sunday February 6 by a local resident walking in the Barranco del Grifo area who came across what appeared to be a human skull and skeletal remains in a ravine.
He immediately contacted Elche Lolal Police who notified the National Police, the local courts and the coroner.
According to an initial examination of the bodies carried out by the coroner at the scene, the corpses belong to a woman of approximately 1.60 metres tall and a man of around 1.80 metres, both under 40 years of age.
The couple was buried one on top of the other, with their arms restrained and eyes and mouth covered with duct tape.
The man had signs of fractures both to his jaw and other facial bones, suggesting he had been tortured, "either to obtain some kind of information from him or as an act of revenge".
Given that the discovery was made about 3pm on Sunday, those in charge of the Provincial Police Station in Alicante decided to postpone the removal of the bodies until Monday and a team from the General Commissariat of Scientific Police travelled from Madrid to begin gathering evidence.
Forensic experts are now carrying out a complete examination of both bodies to determine the cause of death, but one of the early theses is that the woman died of asphyxiation, as the duct tape completely blocked her nose and mouth.
DNA samples will also be run through the police database, and the Violent Crime Group (UDEV) of the Elche police station is sifting through reports of missing people in the whole of the Valencia region, as well as Murcia and Albacete.
Elisabet Ramos Alonso was reported missing, along with her Moroccan boyfriend, in June 2019 by relatives, who have today visited Elche National Police Station to provide a full description of Elisabet and DNA to help determine whether or not the female corpse is indeed hers.
According to police sources, her boyfriend, who disappeared at the same time, has a criminal record for drug trafficking.
