ARCHIVED - Derelict home demolished as part of coastal regeneration project in Guardamar
The 14-month project will open up 120 metres of dunes between Babilonia and Vivers beaches in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
Guardamar Council is nearing completion of a coastal regeneration project which aims to recover a 120-metre stretch of dunes between Babilonia and Vivers beaches, a 14-month initiative in which a derelict house and road have been demolished to make way for wooden walkways.
The work began last September and is expected to finish at the beginning of December.
"The council ordered the demolition and removal of a house in ruins which was located between the two beaches, and with the owner's permission, paid for the work to be carried out. The face of the place is changing with the removal of a stretch of demolished road and as progress is made, wooden walkways will be installed to allow accessibility to the recovered area," explained the Mayor of Guardamar, José Luis Sáez.
In fact, the installation of the walkways is expected to begin this week.
The stretch between the two beaches is considered a "delicate area", as the "beachfront homes are constantly hit by the sea", but according to the local council, nothing is being done at a regional level due to a dispute between the government and concessionaries
"At a local level, we are recovering the area with the demolition of homes in ruins, the alternative is for the owners to appear in court," said the mayor.
Guardamar is one of several towns calling on the regional government to fund projects that tackle the problems of coastal regeneration.
The recovery of this area to its original state is difficult, but with actions such as those being developed, the problem of beach regression can be redirected, not only in this municipality, but in all coastal areas of the country," added the mayor.
