ARCHIVED - Deadly tarantula and snakes seized from an Alicante property are rehomed at Benidorm nature park
The poisonous spider and two snakes were removed from a house in Altea in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province
A deadly tarantula and two snakes seized by police from a house in Altea have been welcomed by Benidorm's Terra Natura nature and animal park.
Altea Council contacted the Guardia Civil last week after several exotic and domestic animals were discovered amongst a mountain of rubbish at a rural property in the town, and "at risk of starvation".
Officers from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) responded and found a number of cats and rodents along with a tarantula, a python and a corn snake. The owner was unable to prove the lawful origin of the latter three and had no relevant documentation so they were confiscated.
Initially, Altea's Animal Health and Welfare Department took care of them but this week Benidorm's Terra Natura welcomed the tarantula and two snakes and they will remain at the facilities "where they will receive care from now on so that they can enjoy optimum living conditions".
They are currently in quarantine and as soon as the veterinary team confirms that they are well enough, they will be transferred to the terrariums at the park's permanent public exhibition of venomous creatures.

Head of the Herpetology Department at Terra Natura Benidorm, David Martí, stressed that "the handling and care of these animals requires specific knowledge to keep them in perfect condition".
"Neither tarantulas nor snakes are pets, so having them at home involves a great responsibility," said the herpetologist, adding: "For us it is always a pleasure and a source of pride to be able to collaborate with the state security forces so that the seized animals have a suitable place to live."
