ARCHIVED - Costa Calida Covid insurance scheme hopes to boost tourism prospects
The initiative covers extra costs incurred by anyone who contracts Covid while on staying in regulated tourist accommodation
The “Covid insurance policy” introduced by the regional government of Murcia for tourists staying in hotel accommodation this summer is to become active as of the start of July, it was announced this week, guaranteeing visitors both from abroad and from other parts of Spain that they will not incur extra costs in the event of becoming infected while staying in the Costa Cálida.
This initiative is included among the government’s plans to help re-activate the tourism sector on the assumption that the pandemic situation will continue to ease sufficiently, and the costs covered for any visitor who contracts Covid-19 while in the Region include those related to medical care, transport and accommodation for patients and their immediate families in quarantine. When the scheme was initially announced in February it was explained that the aim is to strengthen the image of Murcia as a “safe tourism” destination.
At that time, of course, the introduction of the scheme depended on the lifting of inter-regional and international travel restrictions, but there is now growing confidence that by the start of the summer holiday-making will be feasible again, at least to some degree.
It is estimated that the initial investment in the scheme will be in the region of half a million euros, but it has to be stressed that it covers only visitors staying in regulated tourist accommodation (including hotels) and not those in privately owned properties or with friends.
