ARCHIVED - Corvera is recognised as the Best Airport in Europe with under 2m passengers
The Murcia facility also got the nod for ‘Easiest Airport Journey’ and ‘Cleanest Airport in Europe’
The Region of Murcia International Airport, usually referred to locally as Corvera Airport, has been honoured with three prestigious awards for cleanliness, ease of travel and overall experience.
For the third year running, the International Airports Council (ACI) has awarded Murcia with the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ badge for aerodromes serving fewer than 2 million passengers, as well as the distinctions of ‘Easiest Airport Journey in Europe’ and ‘Cleanest Airport in Europe’.
Several other Spanish airports also got the nod in their own categories, including Alicante, Palma de Mallorca and Reus.
The ranking is decided by passengers, who are asked to fill out a questionnaire rating their experience when they travel through Europe’s airports. This is the third consecutive year that Corvera has been honoured after it bagged the ‘Best Hygiene Measures’ against Covid award for the last two years.
The ACI awards programme is a global benchmark in the airport industry that allows the services at each airport to be compared with the facilities in the rest of the world. Passengers are asked about their experience in airports in relation to things like access, the friendliness of staff, security and waiting times.
Carlos Domingo San Martin from the ACI explained that the awards represent “a recognition of the airport staff and management, who, together with the regional administration and the rest of the institutions, airlines, agents and companies, collaborate for the continuous improvement of the facilities and the provision of services”.
Elsewhere in Spain, Palma de Mallorca has been recognised as the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ for between 25 and 40 million passengers, while Alicante-Elche won this award in the 15 to 25 million passengers category.
Murcia’s Corvera continues to rebound from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic: last year, the airport recovered 75% of its 2019 traffic and Aena expects to increase the number of passengers by 13% in 2023, by 31% in 2024 and 43% in 2025.
