ARCHIVED - Cold weather alert prompts police checks on homeless in Denia
Special patrols of areas frequented by homeless people in the Marina Alta are being carried out
Denia Local Police have been carrying out regular patrols of the town's streets over the last 24 hours and will continue to do so until Tuesday night January 18 to offer assistance to homeless people following a cold weather alert for much of Alicante province.
On Monday night, temperatures dropped to 4ºC in Denia town centre, but lows of -3.6ºC were recorded in the neighbouring municipality of Javea as the region continues to experience strong thermal inversions due to the anticyclonic weather and lack of wind.
The sun is expected to shine for the rest of Tuesday, although minimum temperatures will not exceed 14 degrees in Alicante province, and Denia council is encouraging anybody living on the streets in the municipality who needs help, or anyone who knows of a homeless person requiring assistance, to call 965 780 190.
It was reported last year that as a proportion of its population, Alicante has more homeless people than both Madrid and Barcelona.
