ARCHIVED - Climber in helicopter rescue after mountain rock slide in Callosa de Segura
The Portugese man's leg and foot were crushed as he made his way down from the top of the Via Ferrata in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
Firefighters from Alicante's specialist mountain rescue team rescued a middle-aged Portuguese climber who fractured his leg and foot during an accident whilst making his descent from the summit of the Via Ferrata mountain range in Callosa de Segura.
The freak incident happened at around 1pm on Sunday October 10. According to the province's firefighters' consortium, the wounded man tripped near the peak of the mountain, causing a rock slide, and a number of loose rocks landed on top of him, fracturing his foot, tibia and fibula.
The specialist team's Alpha 01 rescue helicopter hauled the stretchered victim from the Via Ferrata and flew him to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela just after 4pm.
