ARCHIVED - Christmas has started in Cartagena!
The lights are on, the Belén is set up and a Christmas market is open on the seafront in Cartagena
Christmas officially began in the city of Cartagena on Saturday December 3, with the switching on of the decorative lights in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento witnessed by a large crowd of people.
Accompanied by a Ukrainian family taking refuge in Cartagena, Mayoress Noelia Arroyo walked through the streets to the municipal nativity scene in the Plaza de San Francisco and the fairground attractions in the Plaza Mayor, on the esplanade of Muelle de Alfonso XII.
There are several new features in this year’s decorations in Cartagena, one of them being a giant shooting star which reaches a height of 18 metres in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. A box of gifts has been placed in the Plaza de San Francisco, while in the pedestrian streets of the city centre and around Plaza de Juan XXIII new lighting has been put up. In Calle del Carmen, meanwhile, the white lights of almond fronds which have become a feature of Christmas in recent years remain in place.
The municipal nativity scene (or Belén) features over 700 figures, the novelties this year including various new buildings and public spaces which are iconic of Cartagena, such as the Arsenal building, the Roman Theatre and, for the first time, the Navidad lighthouse, inside which is the crib. The Belén remains open to the public until January 8.
On the seafront, the Plaza Mayor has become another focal point, with a Christmas market, bouncy castles and toddlers’ fairground rides as well as numerous food and drink stalls.
