ARCHIVED - Cement mixer removed from the River Segura at a cost of 1 million euros
A bridge between El Raal and Beniel collapsed under the weight of the lorry a month ago
It took almost a month, but a cement mixer which fell into the River Segura in Beniel on 29th March, when a bridge collapsed under its weight after the driver failed to see the signage warning of the possibility that this could happen, has finally been removed, and the claim made by the Town Hall of Murcia to the vehicle’s insurance company for the work carried out amounts to the staggering total of 958,320 euros.
The lorry and the rubble from the iron bridge were partially blocking the flow of water in the river and there had been some uncertainty over who should remove it due to the fact that the bridge linked El Raal, in the municipality of Murcia, with La Basca, in Beniel. In the end the Town Hall of Murcia undertook the work and has now revealed the extent of the claim, which includes items of 120,000 and 350,000 euros for work on the foundations and structure of the bridge.
A further 132,000 euros are detailed for general costs and for the company which removed the vehicle from the river bed.
Meanwhile, work is under way to draw up the plans for a new bridge, featuring two carriageways and a pedestrian walkway.
