ARCHIVED - Cases climb ahead of new restrictions in Valencia region: Covid Update July 22
3,159 new Covid cases - 918 in Alicante province - as 14-day cumulative rate jumps to 541.
Hours after the Valencian government revealed proposals to impose social gathering limitations across the region with curfews extended to 77 municipalities, the Ministry of Health has confirmed daily figures in excess of 3,000 for the third time this week.
Having had the "best health data in Europe" six weeks ago (26 cumulative cases), the region now has the ninth highest 14-day incidence rate in the country, with 541 per 100,000 inhabitants - up almost 30 points in 24 hours - prompting the government to propose controversial action, with the tourist sector and town leaders warning new restrictions will "ruin" the summer season.
In comparison, the national average incidence has now risen to 659 cases per 100,000, with the Valencia region exceeding cumulative cases in Murcia (343), and Andalusia (432), but behind Madrid (609), Navarra (957) and Catalonia (1,216).
In addition to regionwide capacity limitations and mobility restrictions "affecting half the population in the region", president Ximo Puig today "insisted" on facemask wearing as infections and hospital admissions continue to increase across all three provinces.
Of the 3,159 new Covid diagnosis, there were: 918 in Alicante province; 1,863 in Valencia and 378 in Castellón.
Hospitals: There are currently 558 Covid patients being treated in Valencian hospitals (up from 525 on Wednesday), of which 73 are in ICU (up from 72): 93 in Alicante province, 12 of them in ICU; 405 in Valencia, 57 of them in ICU; and 60 in Castellón, four in ICU
Recoveries: 2,040 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, a significant rise on the 1,830 recorded on Wednesday, and 1,581 on Tuesday, meaning 419,611 people have been given the all-clear since the start of the pandemic: 152,682 in Alicante province; 223,372 in Valencia; and 43,498 in Castellón.
Fatalities: There have been two reported deaths in the last seven days, meaning the total remains at 7,475: 2,850 in Alicante; 3,816 in Valencia; and 809 in Castellón.
Active cases: There are currently 27,355 active cases, which represents 6.02 per cent of the total positives.
Vaccinations: A total of 3,062,521 people have now received at least one dose and 2,548,414 are fully immunised. By provinces: 917,219 in Alicante; 1,331,771 in Valencia; and 299,424 in Castellón.
