The beach will be created alongside the Fuerte de Navidad which guarded the bay of Cartagena
The Town Hall of Cartagena has outlined a scheme to create a new semi-urban beach in the area of El Espalmador, alongside the winding road which leads out to the Fuerte de Navidad at the mouth of the natural harbour which has led to the city being such an important naval and trading base for thousands of years.
Presented by Mayoress Noelia Arroyo, the plan envisages a beach and a leisure area just north of the Club Náutico El Chalet marina. This in turn forms part of a wider scheme which also encompasses the renovation of the whole area around the lighthouses at the entrance to the harbour, the restoration of the San Leandro gun battery, the development of the “Plaza Mayor” on the seafront and the creation of walking and cycling paths out to the lighthouse of Navidad.
Streetlighting is to be installed along the first section of these paths and telegraph poles are to be removed as cables are laid underground, to be replaced with native plants and trees such as carobs, pines and cypresses.
