ARCHIVED - Cartagena maintains freeze on external table fees to help restauranteurs survive Covid
Covid restrictions in Cartagena, Murcia, have negatively affected the hospitality sector this year
The exemption from paying terrace tax which was applied to the hospitality sector in Cartagena during the pandemic is going to be extended again.
Mayor Noelia Arroyo has asked the Treasury department (Hacienda) to start proceedings to make bars and restaurants in the municipality exempt from this tax as she considers this move necessary to alleviate some of the economic burden that Covid restrictions have had on this sector.
Business owners in the hospitality sector have had on-and-off Covid restrictions throughout the whole year, including at Christmas, when the regional government once again limited the number of customers per table and enforced a mandatory closing time.
The Mayor also mentioned the many municipal grants which the Town Hall has awarded to this sector throughout the year, totalling around five million euros.
This helping hand to bars and restaurants in Cartagena has come at a much-needed time as the sector is expected to lose custom from cruise ship tourists, following an announcement that cruise passengers arriving in Cartagena port would be placed in to ‘bubble groups’ and would have their movements around the city severely limited.
This effectively means that cruise passengers coming to Cartagena will be allowed to visit tourist attractions as normal, but will not be able to go to bars, cafés and shops unless it is as part of an organised tour by the cruise company.
