The company responsible for repairing the historic building has been causing unjustified delays which prejudices the structure further
The saga of the Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara has been rumbling on for years as Cartagena council attempts to force real estate company, Hansa Urbana, to fulfil the legal obligations which require it to carry out urgent repairs to the crumbling monastery, part of an agreement made at a time when the company was attempting to build a large urbanisation next to the Mar Menor, of which the Monastery formed part of the land purchased for the project.Even though the building project cannot now go ahead as the land lies within a protected strip around the lagoon and theoretically should never have even been considered in the first place, the company still has a contractual obligation, although is logically as reluctant to part with its money to fulfill this obligation as the local Council of Cartagena is to pay for the works itself in order to save the building and be done with the matter. In the Local Council meeting held on Friday (June 4), the council issued a message to the construction and real estate company, Hansa Urbana, requiring them to carry out the restoration work on the Monasterio de San Ginés de la Jara, located in Cartagena, within ten days. The local government considers that the delayed building work on the monastery is completely unjustified and, in addition, council members are concerned that these endless delays could be (read, are absolutely) negatively affecting the structure and causing this historic building to decay even further.According to the contract signed by Hansa Urbana, the company is obliged to carry out the restoration work on the monastery, which is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) within the municipality.Failure to comply with the terms in the contract will mean that the government will be forced to take further action against the company to ensure the execution of the reparation work. After years of issuing such threats, and a highly vocal and concerted campaign from residents in the nearby village who have fought for years to try and save this building, it is to be hoped that this finally happens and the necessary work can finally be undertaken, regardless of who actually ends up paying for it, as it would be almost criminal to permit this historic building to decay further.Another topic in the meeting was the approval of the remodelling of the Plaza Bohemia and the construction of a multipurpose building in La Manga, which will have a total investment of around three million euros. In addition the Board also authorized the signing of an agreement with the Paco Martín Cultural Association, which will enable this organization to develop an activity program as part of the cultural agenda in the municipality.
