The hugely popular festival in the Region of Murcia will take place between June 3 and 14
The sixth wave of the pandemic has dealt yet another blow to the Region of Murcia as infections continue to rise at a rapid rate, forcing the Cartagena Carnival Federation to postpone next month's scheduled festival until June. The decision was made on Thursday evening, January 14, and as explained by Cartagena mayor Noelia Arroyo, "is based on the fact that most of the activities of the Cartagena Carnival... take place indoors in sports halls and auditoriums."These include the opening speech and the election of the carnival queens, as well as competitions between chirigotas singing groups and dancing groups.According to the federation, groups and troupes involved in the annual carnival have been relaying their difficulties in preparing parades and rehearsals due to the high incidence of Covid and contagion amongst their members for weeks. And given the lack of relevant health and safety measures, as well as uncertainties over what restrictions will be in place between February 18 and March 1 (when the event was due to take place) it was agreed to reschedule."Moving the programme of events to a time with a lower level of contagion, as other towns and cities have already done, will allow the carnival to be held with a higher level of participation and safety guarantees," explained Cartagena City Council.Last year, organisers were forced to take an alternative approach to normal festivities as a direct result of the pandemic, and a scaled back programme was streamed virtually on the municipal website and the Carnival Federation's social networks.Meanwhile, preparations for Holy Week in Cartagena are underway after a two-year absence, and there are still plans to stage processions through the streets between April 8 and 17.However, some aspects, including the handing out of sweets to children by the Nazarenes, is still up in the air and dependent on the prevailing health protocol.Image: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena

Where to find basic tourism information and information about historical sites and places to visit in Cartagena, Spain.
Cartagena has a wealth of historical sites, including the Roman Theatre Museum, Archaeological Museum, ARQUA Subaquatic Archaeology Museum, Panoramic lift, Civil War Air raid Shelter and Military and Naval Museums, as well as Tourist Bus and Tourist Boat which ferries visitors across to the Fuerte de Navidad.
There is one main Tourist Information Office and 2 tourist information points, the main one being in the Muralla Púnica Interpretation centre in Calle de san Diego and the other next to the Civil War Air Raid Shelter and Panoramic lift.
The office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the easiest place to pick up a map if you've come into the port from a cruise ship, and has a few basic leaflets, but not a lot else.
The information point for the Puerto de Culturas attractions is by the Panoramic lift and Civil War Air Raid shelter in Calle Gisbert, although maps and leaflets are available at any of 3 information points.
There is plenty of in depth information about Cartagena in the dedicated Cartagena section, accessed via the map box at the bottom of every article page or by using the town search box at the top of the page. the introduction gives basic information about the city and then readers can select from the subjects below for information about the city, or the rest of the municipality.
