ARCHIVED - Carnival fever will return to Cartagena in 2022
The vibrant festivities will take place in the Murcia city from February 18 to March 1 next year
As a second wave of Covid gripped the Murcia region and the rest of Spain last October, organisers made the decision to cancel Cartagena Carnival 2020 – one of hundreds of fiestas that fell victim to the pandemic.
Despite the Carnival Federation not ruling out the possibility of holding the festivities later in the year, the pandemic continued to envelope the country and it was deemed impossible due to anti-Covid restrictions.
So the announcement on Monday October 18 that the council and the Carnival Federation have agreed dates for the 2022 fiestas will be welcomed, not only by residents and visitors, but also the thousands of people involved in preparing and taking part in the grand parades and parties.
"This is magnificent news that shows that we are returning to normality after a very hard year-and-a-half of the pandemic," said Cartagena Mayor, Noelia Arroyo.
The program will include most of the usual glamorous and colourful parades and carnival activities which attracted thousands before the pandemic, "although adapted to the health regulations in force at the time in terms of the use of masks, capacity and social distancing," explained Arroyo.
As a precautionary measure to avoid mass gatherings, the Carnival Federation has decided to split the final parade over two days. As such, there will be an adult parade on Saturday afternoon, February 26, and another for children's groups the following day.
The route will also be shorter, although details have not yet been finalised, added Arroyo, pointing out that the main thing is that a "decision has been made to reactivate the carnival machinery".
