ARCHIVED - Caravaca de la Cruz registers two earthquakes in 24 hours
Two earthquakes affected the Region of Murcia on Sunday and Monday
Two small seismic tremors were felt in the Murcia municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz on Sunday September 26 and the early hours of Monday morning, September 27.
The earthquakes measured 2.6 and 2.3 on the Richter scale, respectively, and both epicentres were located west of the outlying districts Archivel and Barranda.
The first earthquake took place at 2.19pm on Sunday afternoon, and the second took place when the majority of the population was sleeping, at around 3am on Monday. Due to the proximity in time and space, and the fact that the second tremor was slightly less intense, it is likely that Monday’s seismic activity was a replica earthquake.
The neighbouring province of Alicante also felt a tremor of a similar magnitude on Sunday, just inland from Benidorm, and further down the coast, the sea between Andalucía and the African continent continues to be a hub of seismic activity, with over ten earthquakes on Sunday alone.
