ARCHIVED - Calpe Seabed Clean-up Day: Saturday November 20
Divers, volunteers and fishermen recovered more than 2,000 kilos of marine litter during the last clear-up in the Marina Alta, Alicante province
Calpe Fishmermen's Guild, marine researchers and the town council are once again joining forces to stage a seabed clean-up day on Saturday November 20.
Around 60 divers, supported by volunteers with paddle boards, will carry out the cleaning of the seabed in Calpe Port, and local fishermen will be responsible for clearing the debris from the shoreline. At the same time, the Cantal Roig cove near the fishing port will also be tidied up.
At the end of the physical side of the day there will be informative talks and videos at the Institute for Research in Environment and Marine Science (IMEDMAR-UCV) facilities located in Calpe's old fish market, along with a Creative Recycling Workshop.
Various diving clubs in the Valencia region are taking part in the eco-friendly initiative, together with the Real Club Náutico de Calpe, the Rotary Ifach-Calpe, environmental associations, and the fishermen's guild, members of which will prepare a traditional seafood dish called fideuá in the port area for everyone who takes part.
More than 2,000 kilos of waste was collected during the last seabed clean-up in Calpe, including a mountain of glass bottles, cans and plastics, wheels and discarded fishing nets, according to the director of IMEDMAR, José Rafael García, who added: "At the same time, this is an enjoyable day of collaboration and awareness for the environment".
Spokesman for Calpe's Fishermen's Guild (Cofradia Pescadores Calpe), Paco Catalá, has stressed that local fishermen are involved in "waste collection efforts" throughout the year.
Fshermen from across the region who participated in the Ecoembes and Ecoalf Foundation's initiative, 'Upcycling the Oceans' in 2020 recovered a shocking 75,000 kilos of marine litter in 14 ports: Castellón, Vinaròs, Benicarló, Peñíscola, Burriana, Valencia, Gandia, Cullera, Villlajoyosa, Santa Pola, Calpe, Dénia, Jávea and Altea.
The guild also works with the social start up Gravity Wave to collect and recycle fishing nets recovered from the sea.
